Grunnskólanám

Grunnskólanám refers to primary and lower secondary education in Iceland. It is a compulsory nine-year period of schooling for children aged 6 to 16. The system is designed to provide a broad foundation in various subjects and to prepare students for further education or the workforce.

The curriculum in grunnskólanám is standardized across the country, though individual schools have some autonomy in their teaching methods. Core subjects typically include Icelandic language, mathematics, English, social studies, natural sciences, physical education, art, and music. The goal is to foster academic development alongside personal and social growth.

Children begin grunnskólanám at age six. The first six years are often referred to as "grunnskóli" or "primary school," followed by three years of "unglingastig" or "lower secondary school." Assessment is ongoing, with a focus on continuous evaluation rather than solely on standardized tests at the end of each stage.

Upon completion of grunnskólanám, students receive a certificate of completion. They then have the option to pursue further academic studies at the upper secondary level (framhaldsskóli) or enter vocational training programs. The Icelandic government oversees the education system, ensuring that all children have access to quality education. The Ministry of Education, Science and Culture is responsible for setting educational policies and guidelines.
