Grunnskoleelever

Grunnskoleelever are pupils who attend grunnskolen, the compulsory education system in Norway. This group includes students from the start of primary school through the end of lower secondary school, typically from about age 6 or 7 to 16 years old. The term emphasizes the students’ status within the national framework of mandatory schooling.

Grunnskolen covers ten academic years, usually organized as primary school (barneskole) and lower secondary school (ungdomsskole) within municipalities. Education is publicly funded and managed by local authorities, following a nationally set curriculum. The curriculum aims to provide a broad foundation in languages, mathematics, science, social studies, arts and crafts, physical education, and religious education, ethics or life stance, with adjustments to meet diverse learner needs. National tests are conducted in certain grades to monitor progress, while teacher assessments determine individual development and progression. At the end of the 10th grade, pupils receive a transcript; there is not a single national exit exam, and many proceed to videregående skole (upper secondary school) to continue their education.

Inclusion and support are central principles of grunnskolen. Schools provide adaptations and specialized instruction (spesialundervisning) when needed, and aim to accommodate pupils with different learning needs, languages, or cultural backgrounds. The system seeks to offer equal access to education, with accommodations for students requiring additional assistance, language support, or individualized learning plans.
