Grundbelysningen, in English commonly referred to as general lighting or ambient lighting, refers to the layer of illumination that provides the principal, even brightness of a room. It establishes the overall visibility, influences how spaces are perceived, and forms the base for other lighting layers.

In practical design, grundbelysningen is usually achieved with ceiling-mounted fixtures, recessed fittings, or wall washers that distribute light broadly. The aim is to produce an even luminance with minimal glare and shadows, supporting safe movement and general task performance.
