Gresik

Gresik refers to a coastal town and port on the northern coast of East Java, Indonesia, as well as the surrounding regency (kabupaten) of Gresik. The city of Gresik lies near Surabaya and is often considered part of the Greater Surabaya metropolitan area. The regency encompasses a broader area with urban and rural districts and is administratively separate from the city.

Historically, Gresik has been a maritime trading center, with long-standing ties to regional commerce and Islam. It is the birthplace of Sunan Maulana Malik Ibrahim, also known as Sunan Gresik, a prominent figure among the Wali Songo; his mausoleum in Gresik is an important religious site for visitors and pilgrims.

The economy of Gresik centers on industry, port activities, and services. The Petrokimia Gresik complex is one of Indonesia’s largest fertilizer and chemical facilities, contributing significantly to the region’s industrial profile. The city also operates a busy port on the Java Sea that supports fishing, trade, and logistics, complemented by light manufacturing and related services in the surrounding area.

Geographically, the area features coastal plains along the Java Sea with a mix of urban settlements and rural villages. Transportation connections link Gresik to Surabaya and the broader northern Java corridor via road networks and port facilities, making it an important node in East Java’s economy and infrastructure.
