The word combines Grenze (border) and Faktor (factor) and is not tied to a single discipline. It is applied in economics, geography, political science, and policy studies to describe border-induced constraints or incentives.

Usage and interpretation vary by context. In regional economics and cross-border studies, the Grenzfaktor encompasses frictions at the border such as regulatory differences, customs procedures, tariffs, transport times, and institutional distance. In migration and security research, it refers to how border controls, visa regimes, and enforcement practices shape movement and risk assessment.
