Grenchen

Grenchen is a municipality in the Biel/Bienne District of the canton of Solothurn, Switzerland. The community, which is situated in the eastern part of the country, is divided into several districts and neighborhoods, including Alchenheit, Böschen colony, der Versammlung, Grenchen Süd, Linden-Oberdorf, Nydegghof, Ried and Sonnenberg. The German-speaking population primarily resides there.

As of the 2015 census, the total resident population of Grenchen was nearly 23,000 people. This represents a significant increase from the 1980 census, when the population numbered slightly above 17,000. The current population density is about 865 individuals per square kilometer.

Geographically, Grenchen lies in the German-speaking part of Switzerland near the city of Solothurn, with the Bernese Jura mountains bordering it to the east. Chemins de fer fédéraux (Federal Railways) and bus services connect it with other neighboring cities. By road, the journey from Basel takes approximately 80 minutes, while Bern takes about a 75-minute car ride.

Local industries include precision mechanics, electronics, and food production, with numerous manufacturing facilities located there. Grenchen is also known for its high firefighters and fire brigade presence within the municipality.
