Gravity-assisted guidance, often referred to as gravity assist or gravitational slingshot, is a spaceflight technique that uses the gravity of a planet or moon to alter a spacecraft’s trajectory and speed. By carefully planning encounters, a spacecraft can gain or lose heliocentric speed and change direction without expending onboard propellant. The maneuver relies on momentum exchange: in the planet’s frame, the spacecraft follows a hyperbolic approach and departure, while in the Sun’s frame the spacecraft emerges faster or slower depending on the encounter geometry. The planet’s motion provides the energy transfer, and the planet itself experiences an imperceptible change in velocity due to its vastly greater mass.

Mechanics and applications: During a gravity-assisted flyby, mission planners choose approach and departure directions to achieve the desired trajectory after the encounter. The technique is especially valuable for interplanetary missions, enabling probes to reach outer planets, adjust inclinations, or increase mission efficiency with limited propellant. It can also alter arrival timing to meet subsequent planetary alignments. The process is described using patched conics or more sophisticated orbital models and requires precise navigation, timing, and knowledge of the gravitational fields involved.

History and examples: Gravity assists have been integral to many historic missions. Early conceptual work and subsequent executions enabled spacecraft to visit Venus, Earth, and the outer planets. Notable examples include the Voyager and Pioneer programs, which used multiple gravity assists to reach and study the outer planets, as well as missions like Galileo and Cassini that leveraged planetary flybys. These maneuvers continue to be a cornerstone of mission design for exploration within the solar system.

Limitations and considerations: Gravity-assisted trajectories depend on favorable planetary alignments and adequate encounter geometry, which can constrain mission windows and duration. Planning requires careful navigation to avoid collision risks and to ensure the desired post-encounter trajectory, and it may necessitate long lead times and complex trajectory corrections.
