Graphite-containing refers to materials or products that include graphite as a constituent or additive. In practice, the term can describe composites, coatings, lubricants, and refractories in which graphite is intentionally incorporated to modify physical properties. The graphite may be natural or synthetic, and can be present as powder, flakes, fibers, or petri-sized particles, depending on the intended function and processing method.

Graphite's layered structure provides lubricity and low shear strength along basal planes, while its electrical and thermal conductivity can enhance performance in certain contexts. In composites, graphite fillers reduce friction, increase conductivity, and influence thermal management. In high-temperature ceramics or refractories, graphite improves toughness and thermal shock resistance but may also affect oxidation resistance.

Applications include graphite-filled polymers for electrical connectors and conductive plastics, graphite-containing lubricants and dry lubricants for bearings and gears, and graphite-reinforced composites used in aerospace and automotive components. In energy storage, graphite-containing materials are common in lithium-ion battery anodes and some sodium-ion systems, where graphite provides a stable, conductive matrix. Nuclear technology uses graphite-containing materials as moderators, reflectors, or in multi-material assemblies specially formulated for irradiation environments.

Processing and safety

Graphite can be introduced through mixing, extrusion, or in-situ formation; particle size and morphology (flake, particulate, or fiber) influence performance. Safety considerations include inhalation risks from fine graphite dust and potential fire or explosion hazards for certain forms in air; standard industrial hygiene practices apply.
