Granuloomaan

Granuloomaan is a Finnish word that translates to "granuloma" in English. A granuloma is a microscopic aggregation of immune cells, specifically macrophages, which are a type of white blood cell. These cells form in response to chronic inflammation, infection, or the presence of foreign bodies. The body forms granulomas as a way to wall off and contain substances that it cannot easily eliminate.

The formation of a granuloma typically begins when macrophages attempt to engulf and digest an irritant. If they are unsuccessful, these macrophages can transform into larger cells called epithelioid cells. These epithelioid cells may then fuse together to form multinucleated giant cells. The granuloma is surrounded by a layer of lymphocytes, another type of white blood cell, which helps to further isolate the affected area.

Granulomas can be found in various parts of the body and are associated with a wide range of conditions. They are commonly seen in infections such as tuberculosis, where they help to contain the bacteria. They can also occur in response to fungal infections, foreign material like splinters, or in autoimmune diseases such as sarcoidosis. The presence and characteristics of a granuloma are often identified through microscopic examination of tissue samples, known as a biopsy. The treatment for granulomas depends on the underlying cause.
