Grammistes

Grammistes is a historical term used to denote scholars and teachers who specialized in grammar and the interpretation of texts. The word derives from Greek grammistēs, formed from grammá “letter” or “written thing” and the agentive suffix -istēs, indicating a practitioner or instructor. The term is most often encountered in discussions of ancient Greek and later Roman educational and scholarly traditions.

In antiquity, grammatikoi or grammarians were part of the scholarly milieu responsible for editing, annotating, and transmitting literature. They worked on textual criticism, established linguistic norms, and taught the rules of language before students advanced to rhetoric and philosophy. Their duties included compiling glossaries, lexicons, and commentaries on authors such as Homer and other classical writers.
