Grammaattinen

Grammaattinen is a Finnish adjective meaning "grammatical" or "grammar-related." It is used in linguistics, language teaching, and writing to describe aspects of a language that pertain to its grammar—morphology, syntax, word forms, and the rules that govern them. In Finnish, the word inflects like other adjectives: grammaattinen, grammaattisen, grammaattista, grammaattisesti, and so on, to agree with the noun it modifies.

In linguistic analysis, "grammatical" denotes that a sentence or structure conforms to the grammar of a language. The related noun "grammaticality" refers to the property of being well-formed under a given set of rules. Researchers study grammaticality judgments to determine speakers' intuitions about correctness, often independently of meaning or plausibility.

Grammaattinen can be contrasted with semantic or pragmatic aspects of language; a sentence can be semantically sensible but ungrammatical, and vice versa. In teaching, instructors may emphasize grammaattinen oikeellisuus: the correctness of grammar usage, including proper case, tense, and agreement in Finnish or the target language.

The term is derived from the same roots as the English "grammatical" and the word "grammar," ultimately tracing to Greek and Latin roots related to writing and rules of language.
