Gradienter

A gradienter is an instrument designed to measure the gradient or slope of a surface or plane relative to the horizontal. In surveying, civil engineering, and construction, gradienters provide tilt data essential for ensuring proper alignment, drainage, and leveling.

Measurement methods range from simple manual devices to digital instruments. Traditional gradienters use a graduated scale, protractor, or spirit level to determine slope, while modern models employ MEMS accelerometers or gyroscopes to compute tilt in two axes and display the gradient in degrees or percent.

Applications include checking road and railway gradients, aligning building floors and foundations, designing drainage fall, and grading earthworks. In robotics and autonomous vehicles, gradient data can help maintain stability and orientation on uneven terrain.
