A Grabstätte typically includes a grave marker or monument and an inscription, serving as a lasting place of remembrance for relatives and descendants.

Common types include Einzelgrab (single grave), Doppelgrab (double grave), and Familiengrab (family plot). For cremated remains there are Urnengräber (urn graves) and Urnennischen (columbariums). Designs range from flat or upright gravestones to mausoleums and columbaria. In addition, some families choose alternative burial forms such as Baum- oder Naturgrab (tree or natural grave), which emphasize environmental considerations.

Legal and administrative aspects are a key part of the concept. Grabstätten are usually owned or leased by individuals or families through the cemetery administration. Leases are often time-limited and may be renewed, extended, or terminated according to local regulations. Maintenance and any inscriptions are typically the responsibility of the owner or heirs, with cemeteries enforcing rules on dimensions, materials, and legibility. When a lease expires without renewal, the site may be cleared and the space reused in accordance with applicable laws and cemetery policies.

Cultural and social dimensions influence the use and design of Grabstätten. They reflect local religious and secular traditions, evolving attitudes toward death, and demographic shifts such as rising cremation rates. Trends include smaller plots, more cremation options, and environmentally oriented burial practices, all within the regulatory framework of cemeteries and burial laws.
