Goliad

Goliad is a city in and the county seat of Goliad County, Texas, United States. It is located in the southern part of the state in the Gulf Coast region and sits along the San Antonio River. The city preserves several 18th-century sites that reflect its Spanish colonial and frontier history, including Presidio La Bahía and Mission Espíritu Santo de Zúiga, which are part of Goliad State Park. These landmarks illustrate the mission system and military defense in early Texas.

In the Texas Revolution, Texian forces under Colonel James Fannin were defeated at Coleto Creek and surrendered at Presidio La Bahía. Shortly afterward, Mexican troops executed hundreds of prisoners in what became known as the Goliad Massacre. The events at Goliad, together with the battle at Coleto Creek, helped galvanize support for Texan independence.

Today, Goliad is a small city that serves as the economic and governmental center of Goliad County. Its economy has historically centered on ranching and agriculture, while tourism related to its historic sites and museums contributes to local activity. The city is served by the Goliad Independent School District and maintains a rural, small-town character that attracts visitors interested in Texas history.
