Gnathanodon

Gnathanodon is a genus of fish in the jack family Carangidae. The genus currently contains only one recognized species, Gnathanodon speciosus, commonly known as the golden trevally. This species is found in the Indo-Pacific region, inhabiting coastal waters, coral reefs, and open seas.

The golden trevally is characterized by its deep, compressed body, which is typically golden to silvery in color. Juveniles often display distinctive black bars and bright yellow fins, which fade with age. They possess a protrusible mouth with smooth, plate-like teeth, adapted for feeding on small invertebrates, crustaceans, and fish. Gnathanodon speciosus can grow to a considerable size, with individuals reaching up to one meter in length and weighing over a dozen kilograms.

These fish are pelagic and can be found solitary or in schools. They are known to associate with sharks, often swimming beneath them to scavenge for scraps. The golden trevally is also a popular target for recreational fishing and is sometimes kept in aquariums. Its flesh is considered edible, though it is not a major commercial species.
