Glödlamor

Glödlamor is a term found in some Swedish-language texts referring to incandescent electric lamps, devices that emit light when an electric current heats a filament until it glows. Today the standard Swedish term is glödlampor, while glödlamor is encountered mainly in older sources or dialectal usage. In English, these devices are known as incandescent lamps or light bulbs.

Construction and operation: A typical incandescent lamp consists of a tungsten filament inside a glass envelope, with the space evacuated or filled with an inert gas. When electricity passes through the filament, it heats to several thousand degrees Celsius and radiates visible light and heat. Efficiency is comparatively low compared with modern lighting technologies; luminous efficacy is typically around 10–20 lumens per watt, depending on design and era. Service life is relatively short, commonly around 1,000 hours.

History and decline: Incandescent lamps were developed in the late 19th century and became widespread during the 20th century, enabling broad electrification and domestic lighting. In the 2000s and beyond, regulations and advances in lighting technology reduced the use of incandescent lamps in favor of more efficient options such as compact fluorescent lamps and light-emitting diodes. Glödlamor remains of historical interest and is still used in decorative applications or in contexts where warm, color-rendering light is valued.
