Insulin is essential for allowing glucose to enter cells for energy. Without sufficient insulin action, glucose builds up in the blood, leading to hyperglycemia. Diabetes can be classified into several types, including Type 1 diabetes, an autoimmune disease where the pancreas stops producing insulin, and Type 2 diabetes, where the body becomes resistant to insulin. Gestational diabetes occurs during pregnancy.

Another category of glucose disturbance is hypoglycemia, characterized by abnormally low blood glucose levels. This can occur in individuals with diabetes, particularly if they take too much medication, skip meals, or engage in strenuous physical activity without adequate food intake. Hypoglycemia can also be caused by other medical conditions, such as certain tumors or endocrine disorders, or by excessive alcohol consumption. Symptoms of hypoglycemia can include shakiness, sweating, confusion, and in severe cases, loss of consciousness.

Disorders of glucose metabolism can have significant long-term health consequences if left untreated, affecting organs such as the heart, kidneys, eyes, and nerves. Diagnosis typically involves blood tests to measure glucose levels. Management strategies vary depending on the specific disorder and may include lifestyle modifications, medication, and regular monitoring.
