Globalsearch

Globalsearch is a term used in information retrieval to describe a search process that queries multiple data sources—such as databases, file repositories, content management systems, and the web—either in parallel or in sequence, and returns a unified set of results. It is widely used in enterprise search, digital libraries, and consumer-facing platforms to provide cross-source discovery.

Architecturally, globalsearch relies on connectors or adapters to each source, a normalization layer to reconcile differing schemas, and a ranking component to order results by relevance. It may perform federated or distributed indexing, deduplicate identical items, apply security and access controls, and offer facets, filters, and hit highlighting.

Common use cases include enterprise knowledge management, e-discovery and compliance, intranet search, and product or content search across multiple catalogs. Globalsearch can improve discovery and productivity, but poses challenges around latency, data freshness, multilingual content, and preserving permissions.
