Glenthar

Glenthar is a fictional town and civil parish located in the northern highlands of Veridia, a coastal country in the North Seas region. It sits along the Oriel River and is surrounded by mixed farmland and woodlands, with the Mistwood Hills rising to the west.

The town covers about 42 square kilometers and features a U-shaped river valley with several small tributaries. The climate is temperate maritime, with cool, damp winters and mild summers; annual precipitation runs around 1,000 millimeters, and snow is infrequent but not unknown.

Glenthar traces its origins to a 12th-century market settlement established by Noric settlers. A stone bridge was completed in the 13th century, enabling trade across the Oriel. The town expanded through the medieval period, and the town hall dates to 1624. The arrival of the regional railway in the late 19th century spurred growth, followed by modernization in the 20th century.

Today Glenthar maintains a diversified economy centered on agriculture, particularly dairy and barley, along with forestry and small-scale manufacturing in wood products. The town also hosts a seasonal tourist trade centered on its historic core and natural surroundings.

As of the latest census, Glenthar has a population of about 7,200 residents. The community is predominantly Veridian-speaking, with English widely used in commerce; the age profile skews toward families and older residents, reflecting a rural setting.

Notable landmarks include Glenthar Cathedral, a Romanesque-influenced church dating from the 12th century, and the Market Hall, built in 1785. The annual Glenthar Harvest Festival and a riverfront promenade are central to local culture.

Glenthar is governed by a seven-member town council within the Veridian regional framework. Education is provided by Glenthar Primary School and Glenthar Academy, with secondary students typically commuting to nearby towns.
