Glenohumeralband

Glenohumeralband is a nonstandard term occasionally used to describe the ligamentous bands surrounding the glenohumeral joint of the shoulder. It is not a widely accepted or official anatomical name; standard references describe the joint's stability in terms of the capsule, the glenohumeral ligaments, and related structures rather than a distinct structure called the "glenohumeralband."

Anatomy: The glenohumeral joint is formed by the articulation of the humeral head with the glenoid cavity of the scapula. Stability is provided by a fibrous joint capsule, the glenoid labrum, the rotator cuff muscles, and a set of ligamentous thickenings. The major ligaments are classically named the superior, middle, and inferior glenohumeral ligaments, and the coracohumeral ligament; some descriptions refer to these as band-like elements of the capsule.

Function: Collectively, these ligaments help limit excessive translation of the humeral head, especially in abduction and external rotation. The inferior glenohumeral ligament, subdivided into anterior and posterior bands, is particularly important for anterior and inferior stability when the arm is raised.

Clinical significance and diagnosis: Injury or attenuation of the glenohumeral ligaments contributes to shoulder instability and dislocations. Clinical assessment includes physical examination for laxity and apprehension, while imaging—primarily MRI or MR arthrography—helps evaluate ligament integrity and capsular thickness.

Terminology and usage: Glenohumeralband is not part of standard anatomy. When encountered, it is advisable to refer to the conventional terms glenohumeral ligaments and joint capsule for clarity and consistency.
