Gleichschalten

Gleichschaltung is a German term that translates to "coordination" or "synchronization." In its most significant historical context, it refers to the process by which the Nazi regime consolidated its power in Germany after Adolf Hitler became Chancellor in 1933. This was not a mere political maneuver but a systematic dismantling of opposition and the imposition of Nazi ideology across all aspects of German society.

The process involved bringing independent organizations, institutions, and professions under the control of the Nazi Party. This included the suppression of political parties other than the Nazi Party, the dissolution of labor unions, and the purging of civil servants deemed disloyal or Jewish. State governments were stripped of their autonomy and brought under central Nazi control. Cultural and intellectual life was also subjected to Gleichschaltung, with artists, writers, and academics forced to conform to Nazi standards or face persecution. The aim was to create a totalitarian state where all aspects of life served the interests of the Nazi Party and its racial ideology. This ensured unwavering loyalty and eliminated any potential dissent.
