Glasvoechirurgie

Glasvoechirurgie, also known as vitreoretinal surgery, is a specialized field of ophthalmology dedicated to the diagnosis and surgical treatment of diseases affecting the vitreous humor and the retina. The vitreous is the clear, gel-like substance that fills the space between the lens and the retina in the back of the eye. The retina is a light-sensitive tissue lining the back of the eye responsible for converting light into neural signals that are sent to the brain for interpretation as vision.

Conditions treated by glasvoechirurgie are diverse and can significantly impact vision. Common procedures include the removal of the vitreous gel (vitrectomy) to address conditions like retinal detachment, where the retina pulls away from the back of the eye. Other indications for vitrectomy include diabetic retinopathy, a complication of diabetes that can cause bleeding and scar tissue formation in the retina, and macular holes, a small break or tear in the macula, the central part of the retina responsible for sharp, detailed vision.

Glasvoechirurgie also encompasses treatments for epiretinal membranes, which are thin layers of tissue that form on the surface of the retina, and floaters, which are small specks or lines that drift across the field of vision, especially when they are dense and disruptive. The surgical techniques employed are highly precise, often involving microsurgical instruments and specialized imaging equipment to ensure optimal outcomes. The goal of these surgeries is to preserve or restore vision by addressing the underlying pathological processes within the posterior segment of the eye.
