Gioproteins
Gioproteins are a proposed family of proteins defined by a conserved Gi-domain and predicted nucleic acid interactions. They occur in bacteria and archaea and have often been found in genomic islands and other mobile elements, where they may influence genome dynamics. The term Gioprotein arises from their association with genomic islands and recurring sequence motifs.
Structure and features: Most Gioproteins are small to mid-sized (roughly 10–25 kDa) and predicted to be alpha-helical.
Functions: Experimental evidence is limited; functional hypotheses include roles in DNA repair, chromosomal organization near mobile
Distribution: Gioproteins have been reported across diverse bacteria and archaea, with higher representation in ecosystems characterized
Research status: Validation remains sparse. Ongoing work seeks structures via crystallography or cryo-EM, to identify binding
