Geöffnet

Geöffnet is the past participle of the German verb öffnen (to open). It can appear in tenses formed with the auxiliary haben, as in ich habe die Tür geöffnet, or in passive constructions with werden, as in die Tür wird geöffnet.

As an adjective, geöffnet means “opened” or “open” and is used to describe objects or spaces that have been opened or are currently accessible. It is common in signage and announcements, for example Geöffnet von 9 bis 18 Uhr (open from 9 AM to 6 PM) and Der Laden ist geöffnet (the store is open). When used attributively, the participle takes normal adjective endings: der geöffnete Laden, das geöffnete Fenster.

Geöffnet is distinct from offen. Offen describes a state of accessibility or visibility (the door is open in general), while geöffnet emphasizes that the action of opening has occurred. In predicative position after sein, bleiben, or werden, geöffnet functions similarly to an adjective but often appears without special endings in the predicate: Der Laden ist geöffnet.

Etymologically, geöffnet derives from öffnen with the ge- prefix that marks deadjectival participles in German. It should be distinguished from other participles that describe states without implying a completed action, and its use is governed by standard German adjective and participle rules, including appropriate endings in attributive position and default predicate form in predicative position.
