Gewebeheilung, also known as wound healing, is the biological process by which damaged tissue in the body is repaired. This complex process involves a coordinated sequence of cellular and molecular events aimed at restoring the integrity of the injured tissue. It is essential for survival and recovery from various forms of injury, from minor cuts to major surgical interventions.

The healing process can be broadly divided into distinct phases. The first phase is hemostasis, which aims to stop bleeding. This involves the formation of a blood clot, which seals the wound and prevents further blood loss. Following hemostasis is the inflammatory phase, characterized by the arrival of immune cells that clear debris and fight infection. This phase is crucial for preparing the wound bed for repair.

The proliferative phase is next, where new tissue is built. Fibroblasts produce collagen, a protein that provides structural support, and new blood vessels are formed through angiogenesis to supply the healing tissue with oxygen and nutrients. Epithelialization also occurs, where skin cells migrate across the wound surface to cover it. Finally, the remodeling or maturation phase can last for months or even years. During this phase, collagen is reorganized and strengthened, leading to a more robust scar tissue.

The efficiency and outcome of tissue healing can be influenced by numerous factors, including the size and type of wound, the presence of infection, the individual's nutritional status, age, and underlying medical conditions such as diabetes. Effective wound care aims to optimize these factors to promote faster and more complete healing.
