Geschichtlichkeit
Geschichtlichkeit, literally “historicality,” is a concept in German philosophy describing the historical situatedness of human existence. It holds that human beings are not timeless or disembodied subjects, but exist within a historical world whose language, norms, and practical possibilities are shaped by past events, cultures, and traditions. Because of this embeddedness, meanings and aims are historically conditioned rather than universal or ahistorical.
The term is most closely associated with Martin Heidegger. In Sein und Zeit (Being and Time, 1927)
In philosophy and the humanities, Geschichtlichkeit underlines the historical character of meaning, language, and social life.
