Georges Pompidou (July 5, 1911 – April 2, 1974) was a French politician and Gaullist statesman who served as Prime Minister under Charles de Gaulle from 1962 to 1968 and as President of France from 1969 until his death in 1974. Born in Montboudry, Corrèze, he built a career within the Gaullist movement and the French government, rising to the role of prime minister during a period of rapid modernization.

As premier, Pompidou pursued economic modernization through state-led investment and industrial policy, and he handled the political turbulence following the May 1968 civil unrest, resigning in 1968. In 1969 he was elected president by direct popular vote, continuing Gaullist foreign and economic policies, including a strong Atlantic alignment and encouragement of European integration. He championed modernization of the economy, infrastructure, and culture, and supported major cultural projects.

Pompidou’s presidency helped shape France’s post-war modernization and its approach to international affairs, balancing domestic modernization with continuity of Gaullist foreign policy. He supported cultural and scientific development as part of national progress, and his era fostered a clearer sense of France’s role within the Western alliance during the Cold War.

Pompidou died in Paris in 1974 while still in office, triggering a transition in leadership and the 1974 presidential election cycle. The Beaubourg area project, later named Centre Pompidou in his honor, became a lasting cultural landmark in Paris and a symbol of his administration’s investment in culture and modernization.
