Georeferenzsystem

A georeferenzsystem, often translated as georeferencing system or geographic referencing system, is a framework used to assign coordinates to locations on Earth. This system allows for the unambiguous identification and location of any point on the planet's surface. Essentially, it provides a common language for describing where things are.

The most common georeferencing system is the geographic coordinate system, which uses latitude and longitude. Latitude measures a location's angular distance north or south of the equator, while longitude measures its angular distance east or west of the prime meridian. These coordinates are typically expressed in degrees, minutes, and seconds, or in decimal degrees.

Another important georeferencing system is the projected coordinate system. These systems transform the curved surface of the Earth onto a flat plane, making them suitable for maps and other two-dimensional representations. Different map projections exist, each with its own distortions, and are chosen based on the intended use of the map.

Georeferencing is fundamental to many fields, including geography, surveying, navigation, remote sensing, and Geographic Information Systems (GIS). It enables the creation of maps, the analysis of spatial data, and the precise location of objects and phenomena in the real world. Without a standardized georeferencing system, it would be impossible to accurately share and understand location-based information.
