Generalbedøvelse, also known as general anesthesia, is a medically induced state of unconsciousness characterized by the absence of sensation and awareness. It is a crucial component of many surgical and medical procedures, allowing patients to undergo interventions without experiencing pain or memory of the event. The primary goal of general anesthesia is to achieve a reversible state of amnesia, analgesia, and muscle relaxation, rendering the patient unaware and immobile.

The administration of general anesthesia typically involves a combination of intravenous medications and inhaled anesthetic agents. These substances act on the central nervous system, suppressing neuronal activity and altering neurotransmitter function. An anesthesiologist, a medical doctor specialized in anesthesia, is responsible for administering and monitoring the patient throughout the procedure. They carefully titrate dosages, manage vital signs such as heart rate, blood pressure, and oxygen levels, and respond to any physiological changes.

The process of inducing general anesthesia begins with the administration of a sedative or anesthetic agent to facilitate the loss of consciousness. Once unconscious, a muscle relaxant may be given to aid in intubation, a procedure where a breathing tube is inserted into the trachea to ensure a clear airway and controlled ventilation. Throughout the surgery, the anesthesiologist continuously monitors the depth of anesthesia, adjusting the anesthetic agents as needed. Upon completion of the procedure, the anesthetic agents are withdrawn, and the patient is allowed to regain consciousness and spontaneous breathing. Recovery from general anesthesia typically occurs in a postanesthesia care unit (PACU) where trained nurses monitor the patient for any immediate complications before discharge or transfer. While generally safe, potential risks and side effects exist, which are carefully assessed and managed by the anesthesiology team.
