They identify, grade, authenticate, and assess stones for properties such as origin and treatments, and they communicate findings to clients, jewelers, insurers, or researchers. Their work helps distinguish valuable gemstones from fakes and informs purchasing decisions, appraisals, and conservation efforts.

Training and credentials are typically obtained through formal education in gemmology offered by recognized institutes and professional associations. Institutions such as the Gemological Institute of America (GIA) and the International Gemological Institute (IGI) provide courses and certifications, which may lead to diplomas, certificates, or fellowships. Ongoing education covers mineralogy, crystallography, spectroscopy, and practical identification methods. Proficiency with standard tools and laboratory equipment is essential.

Methods and tools commonly used by gemmologues include visual examination with a loupe or microscope, and instrumental techniques such as refractometry, polarisoscopy, dichroism testing, spectrometry, ultraviolet fluorescence, and density measurements. They evaluate color, clarity, cut, and carat, and they determine whether stones are natural, treated, synthetics, or simulants. Detecting treatments (for example heat treatment, irradiation, diffusion) and distinguishing genuine stones from manufactured imitations are typical duties, requiring up-to-date knowledge of industry standards.

Work settings for gemmologues vary and include laboratories, jewelry retailers, appraisal houses, auction houses, and museums. They play a key role in trade transparency, consumer protection, and research, contributing to reliable gemstone identification, quality control, and informed decision-making in the jewelry and gem industries.
