Geheftet

Geheftet is a binding method used in printing and publishing in which sheets are stapled together, typically along the fold in the center. The term is commonly used to describe a “geheftete Ausgabe” or a stapled booklet, as opposed to bound formats such as sewn or glued bindings. In practice, geheted publications are usually produced as small, inexpensive items like magazines, pamphlets, student handouts, and fanzines.

In the production process, folded sheets are stacked, stitched with staples along the spine, and often trimmed to produce clean, even edges. This saddle-stitch binding is well suited for short to medium run quantities and low page counts, commonly ranging from a few dozen to a few hundred pages depending on paper thickness and staple capacity. The binding method is less durable than sewn or glued bindings and is more prone to creasing or staple failure with heavy use or moisture.

Geheftet editions are valued for their cost-effectiveness, quick turn-around, and ability to lie flat when opened. They are typically used for periodicals, event programs, informational booklets, and other materials where inexpensive production and easy handling are priorities. Limitations include limited durability, restrictions on maximum page count, and reduced suitability for long-term archival use or heavy handling.
