Gefäßkontrastmittel are substances used in medical imaging to enhance the visibility of blood vessels. They are typically injected intravenously, allowing them to circulate through the vascular system. The contrast agent alters the way X-rays or magnetic fields interact with the tissues, making the vessels appear brighter or otherwise more distinct on images produced by techniques like computed tomography (CT) or magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). This improved contrast is crucial for diagnosing a wide range of conditions, including blockages, aneurysms, malformations, and tumors affecting blood vessels.

The composition of gefäßkontrastmittel varies depending on the imaging modality. For CT scans, iodine-based contrast agents are commonly used. These agents absorb X-rays more strongly than surrounding tissues, thus highlighting the blood vessels. For MRI, gadolinium-based contrast agents are employed. Gadolinium can shorten the relaxation times of water protons in nearby tissues, leading to signal changes that make vessels more apparent.
