Gedit

gedit is the default text editor of the GNOME desktop environment. It is a lightweight, general-purpose editor designed to be simple to use while providing useful features for editing plain text and source code. Written in C with the GTK toolkit, gedit integrates with the GNOME interface and supports the GTK look and feel.

Core features include multiple documents in tabs, syntax highlighting for a wide range of programming and markup languages, line numbering, search and replace (including regular expressions), undo and redo, and basic indentation. It supports UTF-8 and other encodings, and offers bracket matching and a customizable font and color scheme. The feature set is kept minimal by design, but functionality can be extended through a plugin system. Plugins can add spell checking, code completion, external tool integration, project management, and additional editing aids.

gedit is free software released under the GNU General Public License. Development is coordinated by the GNOME project and the editor is distributed as part of GNOME applications on Linux and other Unix-like systems.
