GeVrange

GeVrange is a term used in high-energy physics to describe processes, particles, or phenomena occurring at energies on the order of gigaelectronvolts (GeV). The GeV range typically spans roughly from 1 GeV up to tens or hundreds of GeV, though exact definitions vary by context. In natural units used in particle physics, energy, mass, and momentum are conveniently expressed in GeV, with 1 GeV equal to 1.602×10^-10 joules.

In this energy range, many hadrons and leptons have masses in the GeV scale, and several resonances and bound states lie within reach of contemporary accelerators. Examples include the J/psi at about 3.1 GeV and the Upsilon(1S) at about 9.46 GeV. Fixed-target and collider experiments routinely explore processes at these energies, producing jets, leptons, and neutral bosons. Detectors rely on calorimetry, tracking, and time-of-flight measurements to reconstruct energies and momenta of final-state particles.

GeV-scale studies contribute to precision tests of the Standard Model, investigations of quantum chromodynamics, and searches for new particles or interactions. In other domains, such as gamma-ray astronomy, photons with energies in the GeV range are observed using space- and ground-based instruments, though those applications often emphasize measurement of photons rather than hadronic final states.
