Gasabo

Gasabo is one of the administrative districts of Kigali City, Rwanda. It lies in the central-northern part of the country and forms part of the Kigali metropolitan area. The district was created in 2006 during the reorganization that established the current three-district structure for Kigali City. Gasabo covers urban neighborhoods as well as peri-urban and rural settlements on the outskirts of the capital.

The district is subdivided into a number of sectors (imirenge) and further into cells and villages. Local government is carried out by the Gasabo District Administration and a district council, which coordinate with national ministries and Kigali City authorities to deliver services.

In terms of economy and land use, Gasabo hosts residential areas, commercial zones, schools, health facilities and markets. The district is connected to central Kigali and other districts by major roads and public transport routes, facilitating commuting and trade.

Planning and development efforts focus on housing, water and sanitation, road maintenance, waste management and land use planning. Gasabo also hosts government offices and some diplomatic and international facilities in certain areas, reflecting its role within the capital region. The district faces challenges typical of fast-growing urban areas, including infrastructure expansion, service delivery, and environmental management, and it participates in national and city-wide strategies to address them.
