Gammahemolüütilised is a term used in microbiology to describe a specific type of hemolysis, which is the lysis or breakdown of red blood cells. Hemolysis is often observed on blood agar plates, a common growth medium used to identify and differentiate bacteria. There are generally three recognized types of hemolysis: alpha (α), beta (β), and gamma (γ).

Gammahemolysis, also known as non-hemolytic, refers to the absence of any visible lysis of red blood cells around a bacterial colony grown on blood agar. This means that the agar remains unchanged, and no clearing or discoloration is observed. Unlike alpha hemolysis, which causes a greenish discoloration due to the partial breakdown of hemoglobin, and beta hemolysis, which results in a clear zone around the colony due to complete lysis of red blood cells, gammahemolysis indicates that the bacteria in question do not produce hemolysins, enzymes that break down red blood cells.

The identification of gammahemolytic bacteria is an important step in the diagnostic process. Many pathogenic bacteria are hemolytic, with beta-hemolysis being particularly associated with significant virulence. Therefore, the absence of hemolysis can help narrow down the possibilities when identifying an unknown microorganism. While gammahemolysis itself does not signify a lack of pathogenicity, it is a characteristic that contributes to the overall profile of a bacterial species.
