Gamagrass

Gamagrass (Panicum repens) is a perennial tufted grass belonging to the family Poaceae. It is native to the southeastern United States and northern Mexico, where it typically occurs in moist to wet habitats such as bottomlands, riverbanks, shorelines, and wetlands. The species has been naturalised in many other temperate regions, including parts of Europe and the Pacific Islands, and is known elsewhere as “white panic” or “brown panic”.

The plant forms dense clumps of linear leaves up to 30 centimetres tall, with flat, involute leaf margins. The flowering stems rise 30–90 centimetres above the clump, bearing cylindrical panicles that produce rounded, brown spikelets. Individual spikelets typically rank 1–2 centimetres long, each containing 4–7 florets. Gamagrass reproduces both by seed and by extensive rhizomatous rootstock, which allows it to colonise large areas quickly.

Gamagrass is a preferred pioneer species on disturbed wet sites because it establishes rapidly and tolerates periodic flooding. Because of its density, it can exclude native herbaceous plants, leading to reduced biodiversity. In some regions it is considered invasive and is subject to management or eradication programs. In its native range it serves important ecological roles: it stabilises stream banks, provides habitat for wetland wildlife, and supports pollinators when in flower.

References to local management guidelines frequently emphasise early intervention during the seedling stage. Physical removal of clumps and herbicide treatments can reduce its spread, but germination may continue from residual rootstock. Despite its invasive potential, gamagrass can also be used as a low‑maintenance groundcover in constructed wetland and riparian restoration projects where rapid ground cover is desirable.
