Galvaalinen is a term that refers to a type of corrosion that occurs when two dissimilar metals are in electrical contact in the presence of an electrolyte. This phenomenon is also known as galvanic corrosion. The more noble metal will be protected, while the less noble metal will corrode preferentially. The driving force for this corrosion is the difference in electrochemical potential between the two metals.
