Galloanserae

Galloanserae is a clade of birds that includes the fowl and waterfowl. This group is part of the larger clade Neoaves, a diverse assemblage of modern birds. The Galloanserae are characterized by several shared anatomical and genetic features, though these are not always immediately apparent to casual observers. The two main living orders within Galloanserae are the Galliformes and the Anseriformes.

The order Galliformes comprises the fowl, a group that includes chickens, turkeys, pheasants, and quails. These birds are typically terrestrial or semi-arboreal, with strong legs for scratching and pecking. Many species are known for their diverse vocalizations and elaborate courtship displays.

The order Anseriformes, on the other hand, includes the waterfowl, such as ducks, geese, and swans. These birds are largely aquatic or semi-aquatic, possessing webbed feet for swimming and often specialized bills for foraging in water. They are known for their migratory habits, with many species traveling long distances seasonally. Fossil evidence suggests that the divergence of these two orders occurred relatively early in avian evolution. The classification of Galloanserae is primarily based on molecular phylogenetic studies, which have provided strong support for this grouping.
