Gallblöðran

Gallblöðran, or the gallbladder, is a small, pear-shaped organ located beneath the liver in the upper right quadrant of the abdomen. Its primary function is to store and concentrate bile, a digestive fluid produced by the liver that helps in the digestion and absorption of fats.

The gallbladder typically measures about 7 to 10 centimeters in length and 3 to 4 centimeters in diameter. It is connected to the liver and small intestine via a network of bile ducts, including the cystic duct and the common bile duct. During digestion, especially after the intake of fatty foods, the gallbladder contracts and releases bile into the small intestine to aid in breaking down fats.

Common disorders of the gallbladder include gallstones, which are solid particles that form when bile components become supersaturated. Gallstones can cause pain, inflammation, or blockages, leading to conditions such as cholecystitis, which is inflammation of the gallbladder. Other issues include biliary dyskinesia, where motility problems affect bile flow, and gallbladder cancer, which is relatively rare.

Diagnosis of gallbladder problems often involves imaging techniques such as ultrasound, which can detect gallstones and inflammation. Treatment options may include medication, lifestyle modifications, or surgical removal of the gallbladder, known as cholecystectomy.

The gallbladder plays a crucial role in the digestive system, and its health is essential for efficient fat digestion. Despite its small size, it can significantly impact overall digestive health if affected by disease or injury.
