Gal3p

Gal3p, also known as UDP-galactose transporter 3, is a protein encoded by the GAL3 gene in humans. It is a member of the major facilitator superfamily of transporters and is primarily localized to the endoplasmic reticulum membrane. The main function of Gal3p is to transport UDP-galactose from the cytoplasm into the lumen of the endoplasmic reticulum. This transport is a crucial step in the biosynthesis of various glycoconjugates, including glycoproteins, glycolipids, and glycosaminoglycans.

UDP-galactose is a key substrate for glycosylation reactions that occur within the endoplasmic reticulum and Golgi apparatus. By facilitating the movement of UDP-galactose into these organelles, Gal3p ensures that the necessary building blocks are available for the proper synthesis and modification of numerous cellular components. Defects in Gal3p function can lead to a variety of congenital disorders of glycosylation (CDGs), a group of rare genetic diseases characterized by impaired glycosylation. These disorders can manifest with a wide range of symptoms affecting multiple organ systems, including neurological dysfunction, developmental delay, liver disease, and skeletal abnormalities.
