Gadolíniumlerakódásról refers to the deposition or accumulation of gadolinium in various tissues and organs within the body. Gadolinium is a rare earth metal that is commonly used as a contrast agent in magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scans. While generally considered safe when administered intravenously and excreted by the kidneys, concerns have arisen regarding the potential for gadolinium to be retained in the body, particularly in individuals with impaired kidney function.

The primary mechanism by which gadolinium is deposited is thought to be through the release of free gadolinium ions from the contrast agent complex. These free ions can then bind to endogenous molecules and accumulate in tissues such as the brain, skin, bone, and other organs. The long-term health implications of gadolinium deposition, particularly in the brain, are still a subject of ongoing research. Some studies have suggested a correlation between repeated exposure to gadolinium-based contrast agents and the development of nephrogenic systemic fibrosis (NSF) in patients with severe kidney disease, a condition characterized by thickening and hardening of the skin and other tissues.

While NSF is a serious concern, it is primarily associated with older, less stable gadolinium contrast agents. Newer, more stable formulations are believed to have a lower risk of dissociation and subsequent deposition. Nonetheless, careful consideration of patient kidney function and the judicious use of gadolinium-based contrast agents remain important aspects of medical practice. Research continues to investigate the long-term effects of gadolinium deposition and to develop strategies for its prevention and management.
