It covers domestic, commercial, and industrial settings to reduce the risk of leaks, fires, explosions, and carbon monoxide poisoning.

Key hazards include the accumulation of flammable gas in confined spaces, ignition sources that can trigger fires or explosions, and carbon monoxide production from incomplete combustion. Gas safety relies on correct installation, regular maintenance of appliances, proper ventilation, and reliable detection systems.

Prevention and detection are central to gas safety. This includes having licensed professionals install and service boilers, stoves, heaters, and gas lines; ensuring adequate ventilation in enclosed areas; using approved gas detectors and carbon monoxide alarms; properly storing gas cylinders; and performing leak checks with soapy water rather than flames.

Emergency response procedures emphasize rapid, calm action. If a gas smell or unusual hissing is detected, individuals should avoid using electrical switches or open flames, evacuate the area, and contact the gas supplier or emergency services from a safe location. If safe, shut off the gas supply at the main valve.

Regulatory aspects typically involve codes of practice, installation standards, and licensing requirements established by national or regional authorities. Responsibilities fall on homeowners, landlords, facility managers, and trained gas engineers to maintain safe usage and to respond effectively to incidents.
