GWPidhorizontok

GWPidhorizontok is a framework concept used in climate science to describe a set of time horizons employed to evaluate the Global Warming Potential (GWP) of greenhouse gases. Unlike a single-number metric, it emphasizes how the perceived impact of a gas varies across different future periods.

In this approach, GWP values are computed for multiple horizons, commonly including short-term (around 20 years), mid-term (around 100 years), and long-term (500 years or more). These horizons reflect differences in atmospheric lifetime and radiative efficiency among gases, and they allow for more nuanced comparisons in policy analysis and life-cycle assessment.

The purpose of GWPidhorizontok is to provide decision-makers with horizon-specific information to align mitigation priorities with short- and long-term objectives. Calculation involves the gas’s radiative efficiency and decay in the atmosphere, followed by normalization to CO2 for each chosen horizon. Because the results depend on horizon definitions, the framework requires clear documentation of the horizons used and the underlying models.

Applications include evaluating methane versus carbon dioxide abatement strategies, energy and industrial policies, and product-life analyses. In general, methane shows stronger warming signals in near-term horizons due to its shorter lifetime, while over longer horizons the cumulative impact of CO2 remains more dominant, affecting comparisons and prioritization.

Limitations include potential confusion from multiple horizon values, sensitivity to horizon choice, and the risk of misinterpretation if horizon definitions are not transparent.
