GVWR

GVWR, or gross vehicle weight rating, is the maximum permissible weight of a road vehicle as specified by the vehicle manufacturer. It represents the weight of the vehicle itself plus the weight of passengers, cargo, and all fluids when the vehicle is ready to operate, including fuel, oil, coolant, and standard equipment. It does not include the weight of any trailer being towed.

Manufacturers determine GVWR based on the strength of the vehicle’s frame and suspension and on the capacity of the braking and steering systems to safely control the loaded vehicle. The rating is typically printed on a certification label attached to the driver's door pillar and is listed in the owner’s manual or specifications sheet.

GVWR is distinct from other weight ratings. GAWR (gross axle weight rating) is the maximum permissible load on each axle. GCWR (gross combined weight rating) is the maximum allowable weight of the vehicle plus any trailer. The actual weight of a loaded vehicle is called the gross vehicle weight (GVW). Payload capacity is approximately GVWR minus the vehicle’s curb weight (and any standard equipment weight), representing how much cargo and how many passengers can be carried.

Operating within GVWR is important for safety and legality. Exceeding GVWR can degrade braking and handling, increase tire and component wear, and may violate laws or insurance terms. Vehicles with appropriate tire load ratings and proper loading help ensure compliance with GVWR.
