Förpackningsregler, or packaging regulations, refer to the laws and guidelines governing the design, production, labeling, and disposal of packaging materials. These regulations aim to protect human health and the environment, promote fair trade, and ensure consumer safety. Key aspects often addressed include the types of materials used, the presence of hazardous substances, and the recyclability or biodegradability of packaging.

In many countries, legislation dictates that producers and importers are responsible for managing the end-of-life phase of their packaging. This often involves contributing to or operating systems for collection, sorting, and recycling. Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) is a common principle underpinning these regulations, shifting the burden of waste management from municipalities to the packaging producers themselves.

Labeling requirements are also a significant part of packaging regulations. These can include information about the packaging material, instructions for disposal or recycling, and warnings about potential hazards. For food packaging, specific rules ensure that materials are safe for contact with foodstuffs and do not transfer harmful substances. Environmental claims made on packaging, such as "recyclable" or "biodegradable," are also subject to strict rules to prevent greenwashing and ensure accuracy.
