Förevakuumtyper is a Swedish term that translates to "forevacuum types" or "pre-vacuum types" in English. This term refers to the initial stage of a vacuum system's operation, specifically the vacuum level achieved before a higher vacuum is established. Forevacuum pumps are used to reduce the pressure in a chamber from atmospheric pressure down to a lower pressure, typically in the millibar or Pascal range. This preliminary vacuum is crucial for the efficient operation of subsequent high vacuum or ultra-high vacuum pumps, which are often unable to start or function effectively at atmospheric pressure.

There are several common types of forevacuum pumps, each with its own operating principle and applications. Rotary vane pumps are widely used due to their simplicity and reliability. They utilize a rotor with vanes that create chambers of decreasing volume, expelling gas. Diaphragm pumps are another option, known for their oil-free operation, making them suitable for applications where contamination is a concern. Scroll pumps employ two interleaved spiral shapes to compress and move gas. Piston pumps, similar to those found in air compressors, can also be used as forevacuum pumps. The choice of forevacuum pump depends on factors such as the required ultimate pressure, gas load, process compatibility, and cost. Successfully achieving the correct forevacuum level is essential for the performance and longevity of many scientific and industrial vacuum processes, including mass spectrometry, electron microscopy, and semiconductor manufacturing.
