Fördertrommeln

Fördertrommeln are rotating cylindrical devices used in bulk-material handling to convey or regulate the flow of materials. In German-speaking industry, the term covers drum conveyors as well as rotary feeders, and they are part of the broader field of Fördertechnik (material handling). A typical Förder trommel consists of a cylindrical shell supported by bearings, with end plates and a drive unit that causes rotation. The drum may be solid or perforated, and some designs include internal flights or lifters to improve material movement.

Operation and variants: As the drum turns, material is tumbled and moved along the length by gravity, friction, and the action of internal flights. In conveyor configurations, rotation helps transport bulk material from one point to another. In feeder configurations, discharge openings and rotational speed regulate throughput, providing metering to downstream processes. Perforated drums function as drum screens, enabling size separation or sorting in addition to conveying.

Materials and construction: Drums are typically made from steel or other wear-resistant alloys, with diameters and lengths chosen to match required capacity. Supporting rollers or bearings, a motor-driven drive, and inlet/outlet chutes form the core, while some designs include sealing and dust-control features.

Applications: Fördertrommeln are used across mining, quarrying, cement production, agriculture, and waste processing, wherever a combination of gentle conveying, metering, or coarse-size screening is advantageous.

Advantages and limitations: They offer simple, robust construction and can handle abrasive or moist materials. They provide integrated conveying and dosing or screening, reducing equipment counts. Limitations include wear and maintenance needs, limited precision for fine metering, and potential for clogging with sticky materials.
