Förbränningsmotorsystem, often translated as internal combustion engine system, refers to the complex assembly of components that convert chemical energy stored in fuel into mechanical energy through controlled combustion. This process is fundamental to the operation of most vehicles, aircraft, and many industrial machines.

The core of the system is the engine itself, typically comprising cylinders, pistons, connecting rods, and a crankshaft. Fuel is mixed with air and introduced into the cylinders where it is ignited by a spark plug (in gasoline engines) or by compression (in diesel engines). This rapid combustion creates high pressure that forces the piston downwards, turning the crankshaft. This rotational motion is then transferred to the drivetrain to power the machine.

Key supporting components include the fuel system, which stores and delivers fuel to the engine; the intake system, which supplies air; the exhaust system, which removes combustion byproducts; the cooling system, which prevents overheating; and the lubrication system, which reduces friction between moving parts. Ignition systems are crucial for initiating combustion at the precise moment.
