Fôradditivers

Fôradditivers are substances intentionally added to animal feeds to improve production efficiency, animal health, product quality, or storage stability. They are typically categorized by purpose rather than ingredient type, including nutritional additives (such as vitamins, minerals, and amino acids), zootechnical additives (that influence growth, digestion, or welfare), technological additives (which affect texture, shelf life, or safety), and sensory additives (that influence palatability).

Common examples encompass vitamins and mineral premixes, essential amino acids like lysine or methionine, enzymes such as phytase, probiotics and prebiotics, organic acids and antioxidants, as well as flavor enhancers, binders, and preservatives. Technological additives may include anti-caking agents, stabilizers, or mold inhibitors, while zootechnical additives cover gut-health modulators and enzymes that improve feed digestibility.

Regulatory and safety considerations vary by region. In the European Union, feed additives require authorization under regulations such as EC No. 1831/2003 and must be demonstrated safe and effective for target species, with specified usage conditions and labeling. In the United States, feed ingredients are overseen by the FDA, with assessments of safety for animals, humans, and the environment; certain categories, notably antimicrobial growth promoters, face restrictions or bans in many jurisdictions. Proper evaluation and post-market monitoring are common components of oversight.

Practical use involves incorporating additives through premixes or directly into feeds at regulated inclusion rates. Additives should complement balanced nutrition and be managed to avoid interactions or adverse effects, including withdrawal considerations for products entering the human food chain. Responsible use aims to enhance performance while safeguarding animal welfare and public health.
